Group 4: the hardest road sign questions, prohibition and priority
In the hardest Group 4 questions, one detail decides the answer. Sign 3.28 "No parking" bans only parking, so in its zone you may stop and unload. The zone of sign 3.27 "No stopping" can be set by the length of the yellow marking 1.4, while sign 3.28 applies up to the nearest intersection, and in a built-up area with no intersection, up to the end of the built-up area.
Warning signs (for example 1.5 and 1.6) ban nothing and give no priority. Plate 8.4.3 extends a sign to passenger cars and trucks up to 3.5 t, but not to motorcycles. Sign 6.2 "Recommended speed" is not a speed limit; speed limits have a separate article.
Typical traps
- "You cannot unload in the zone of sign 3.28": wrong. Unloading is a stop, and sign 3.28 bans only parking.
- "The sign applies to the end of the road": wrong. Sign 3.28 applies up to the nearest intersection, and in a built-up area with no intersection, up to the end of the built-up area (after sign 5.24.2 there is no zone).
- "A blue sign with a number limits the speed": wrong. That is 6.2 "Recommended speed"; a limit is introduced by, among others, sign 5.21 "Residential zone".
- "A warning sign obliges you to give way": wrong. The order of passage is set by priority signs.
- "A U-turn is always allowed at an intersection": wrong. On a one-way road a U-turn is banned (Rules, point 50). Other U-turn bans are in the U-turn article.
Signs 3.27 and 3.28: what exactly is banned
Sign 3.27 "No stopping" bans stopping and parking, sign 3.28 "No parking" bans only parking. Boarding, alighting, loading and unloading count as stopping, not parking (Law, Article 2), so sign 3.28 does not ban them. Both signs apply only on the side of the road where they stand. The zone of signs is covered in a separate article, and stopping and parking rules in the parking article.
Priority signs on a narrow section
At sign 2.6 "Priority for oncoming traffic" you must give way to oncoming vehicles on a narrow section. Sign 2.7 "Priority over oncoming traffic", on the contrary, gives priority to you. On sections with 1.13 "Steep descent" and 1.14 "Steep ascent", if oncoming traffic is difficult, the driver going downhill gives way (Rules, point 46). Priority at intersections is in the intersection article.
Eight exam questions explained
Below are eight Group 4 questions. Each describes the picture, the correct answer, why the others are wrong, the trap, how to remember it, and the point of the Rules or the sign. The number is the question's number in group 4; it is the same in the Armenian, Russian and English versions and matches the official question bank.
Question 131. Unloading in the zone of sign 3.28
In the picture. Sign 3.28 "No parking" on the right. The question: may you unload the vehicle in its zone?
Correct answer. Allowed, regardless of the time.
Why the others are wrong. "Prohibited" is wrong: sign 3.28 bans only parking, and standing to unload a vehicle is not parking under the Law. "Allowed if it lasts up to 5 minutes" is wrong too: a stop lasts up to 5 minutes or as long as needed for loading or unloading.
The trap. The number "5 minutes" comes from the definition of a stop and creates a false condition.
How to remember. Sign 3.28: you may stop, you may not park. Sign 3.27 bans both.
Rule. Rules, sign 3.28. Law, Article 2.
Question 103. Stopping at sign 3.27 and a yellow line
In the picture. Sign 3.27 "No stopping" on the right, a solid yellow marking 1.4 along the edge of the road. The car stops after the yellow line has ended.
Correct answer. Stopping is allowed.
Why the other option is wrong. Sign 3.27 may be used together with the yellow marking 1.4, and then its zone is the length of the marking. After the line the zone has ended, so "Prohibited" is wrong.
The trap. The sign is visible in the picture, and it seems that the ban applies everywhere.
How to remember. If there is a yellow line next to sign 3.27, check where the line ends.
Rule. Rules, sign 3.27, marking 1.4.
Question 98. Parking after sign 5.24.2
In the picture. Sign 3.28 "No parking" on the right, a little further sign 5.24.2 "End of built-up area". The car is parked after sign 5.24.2.
Correct answer. Parking is allowed.
Why the others are wrong. Sign 3.28 applies up to the nearest intersection, and in a built-up area with no intersection, up to the end of the built-up area. The car is outside the zone of the ban, so "Prohibited" is wrong. "Allowed only during daylight hours" is wrong too: there is no time condition here.
The trap. The second option adds a time condition that has nothing to do with the sign.
How to remember. Look for where the ban ends: an intersection or the end of the built-up area.
Rule. Rules, sign 3.28. Signs: 3.28, 5.24.2.
Question 125. Entering a yard with sign 4.1.1
In the picture. Sign 4.1.1 "Straight ahead only" stands beyond the intersection, at the start of a road section. There are entrances to yards on the left and on the right.
Correct answer. The right yard.
Why the others are wrong. Sign 4.1.1 stands beyond the intersection, at the start of a road section, so it applies up to the next intersection. Placed like that, it does not prohibit a right turn into yards and other areas adjacent to the road, but a left turn is still banned. So "Left", "Both yards are allowed" and "No yard can be entered" are wrong.
The trap. A "straight ahead" sign seems to ban every turn, including a turn into a yard.
How to remember. The banned left turn stays banned, but a right turn into a yard is not restricted by such a sign.
Rule. Rules, sign 4.1.1.
Question 141. Which directions are open from your lane with signs 5.15.2
In the picture. Three signs 5.15.2 "Directions of travel in a lane" hang over the lanes: over the left edge lane, left only; over your middle lane, straight and left; over the right lane, straight and right.
Correct answer. Left and straight.
Why the others are wrong. "Only straight" is wrong: the sign over your lane also allows a left turn. "Left, straight ahead and a U-turn" is wrong: a U-turn is allowed only by a sign allowing a left turn from the left edge lane, and here that is a separate left-turn lane. You may not make a U-turn from your lane.
The trap. The third option adds a U-turn that the sign over your lane does not give.
How to remember. A U-turn is allowed by the sign over the left edge lane. Read the sign over your own lane, not the neighbouring one.
Rule. Rules, sign 5.15.2. More on left turns and lane choice is in the left-turn article.
Question 119. Plate 8.4.3: whom the sign applies to
In the picture. A white plate with a passenger car (8.4.3 "Type of vehicle"). The question: whom does the sign used with this plate apply to?
Correct answer. Passenger cars, and also trucks with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 t.
Why the others are wrong. "Only passenger cars" is too narrow: plate 8.4.3 also includes trucks up to 3.5 t. "Passenger cars and motorcycles" is wrong: motorcycles are not included.
The trap. Only a passenger car is drawn on the plate, so trucks seem to be left out.
How to remember. Plate 8.4.1 (truck): trucks over 3.5 t. Plate 8.4.3 (passenger car): passenger cars and trucks up to 3.5 t.
Rule. Rules, plate 8.4.3. More on plates is in the article on the zone of action.
Question 136. How soon can an equal intersection come
In the picture. In a built-up area, sign 1.6 "Intersection of equal roads" on the right. There is no plate 8.1.1 "Distance to object".
Correct answer. 50 meters.
Why the others are wrong. In built-up areas sign 1.6 is placed 50–100 m before the hazard, and outside them 150–300 m. This is a built-up area with no plate, so the intersection may come as soon as 50 m after the sign. 100 m is the top of this range, and 150 m is the minimum outside built-up areas.
The trap. 100 and 150 m are other numbers from the same rule.
How to remember. In a built-up area 50–100 m, outside it 150–300 m. "At least" means the smaller number.
Rule. Rules, sign 1.6 (distances for placing warning signs).
Question 139. What does sign 1.5 mean
In the picture. On a bend in the road, on the right, a triangular sign with a red border and a tram (1.5 "Tram line crossing").
Correct answer. Warns about crossing with tram lines.
Why the others are wrong. "About approaching the tram stop" is wrong: a tram stop is marked with sign 5.17 "Tram stop". "Obliges to give way to the tram driver" is wrong too: the order of passage is set by priority signs, not warning signs.
The trap. The tram on the sign suggests a stop or giving way.
How to remember. A triangle with a red border only warns. The order of passage is set by priority signs and the rules.
Rule. Rules, sign 1.5. Signs: 1.5, 5.17. The overall picture of sign groups is in the article on sign groups.
How to reinforce it
In most of these questions the answer depends on a detail: the sign code, a yellow line, a plate or the words "at least". You can go through the practice set "Road signs" (group 4) without signing up, and the same rules with point references are in the theory for group 4. When you get steady results on this topic, test yourself in the exam simulation.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you unload in the zone of sign 3.28 "No parking"?
- Yes, regardless of how long it takes. Sign 3.28 bans only parking, and stopping to load or unload is a stop, not parking (Law, Article 2). A stop is banned by sign 3.27.
- Who gives way on a section with signs 1.13 or 1.14?
- If oncoming traffic is difficult, regardless of where the obstacle is, the driver going downhill gives way (Rules, point 46).
- Whom does a sign with plate 8.4.3 apply to?
- To passenger cars and also to trucks with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 t. Motorcycles are not included.
- How soon after sign 1.6 in a built-up area can an equal intersection come?
- As soon as 50 m after the sign. In built-up areas warning signs are placed 50–100 m before the hazard, and outside them 150–300 m. A different distance is shown on plate 8.1.1.
