Hardest theory exam questions: where mistakes happen (10,000+ bibip answers)

We looked at more than 10,000 answers to questions saved in our system, from 16.09–07.10.2026. The share of correct answers is lowest in group 4 “Road signs” (76%) and group 1 “Maneuvers, U-turns and giving way” (77%), and highest in group 11, the color plates (96%). Of the 15 questions with the lowest share of correct answers (at least 20 answers each), 13 are from group 1: left turns, U-turns, lane choice and tram tracks.

This is data from our own site, not exam statistics. Below: how we counted, a table of all 11 groups, and a look at the questions where our share of correct answers is about 40–55%.

How we counted

  • Source. More than 10,000 answers to questions saved in our system: answers in practice and tests, the current question base for categories A, B, C.
  • Period. 16.09–07.10.2026, more than 10,000 answers in total.
  • Threshold. The main list holds questions answered at least 20 times. Questions with 15–19 answers are shown separately and with more caution.
  • Sample size. The total is large, but each top-10 question has only 21–40 answers. That is small: the gap between 44% and 48% may be chance. Read the numbers as a guide, not a ranking.
  • Repeats. We did not split answers by person. One person may have answered the same question several times; we do not know how often that happened.
  • Causes. The data shows where correct answers are rarer, not why. The explanations below are an analysis of the questions against the rules, not a conclusion drawn from the statistics.

Share of correct answers by group

Group Topic Answers Correct Practice
1 Maneuvers, U-turns and giving way 3,426 77% group 1
2 Traffic Safety Law and basic terms 1,620 82% group 2
3 Faults that prohibit operating a vehicle 1,185 81% group 3
4 Road signs 2,319 76% group 4
5 Right of way at intersections 936 87% group 5
6 Traffic light and traffic controller signals 1,224 82% group 6
7 Stopping, parking and road markings 1,009 81% group 7
8 Speed, towing, carrying people and cargo 915 88% group 8
9 Signals, lights, overtaking and railway crossings 1,088 88% group 9
10 First aid 824 90% group 10
11 bibip's color-plate set (stands in for the psychological test) 2,196 96% group 11

The spread between groups is modest: 76–96%. Mistakes are most common in groups 4 and 1, which also have the most questions with pictures.

Top 10: questions with about 40–55% correct

The questions are listed by rising share of correct answers, but do not take the order inside the list seriously: each question has only 21–40 answers. Numbers follow the current base and are the same in hy, ru and en. Every question has its own page with the picture, the answer options and an explanation.

A sign with a plate and lane choice: the left lane, sign 4.1.4 and plate 8.4.1

Group 1, no. 71: 40% correct, 25 answers.

Question. In which direction or directions may the passenger-car driver continue from this lane? The picture shows sign 4.1.4 “Straight ahead or turn right” with plate 8.4.1 (a truck); the car is in the leftmost lane.

Correct answer. Straight ahead, to the left, and by making a U-turn.

Where it is easy to slip. A “straight or right” arrow invites you to read it as meant for you. But plate 8.4.1 narrows it: the sign applies only to trucks with a maximum permissible mass over 3.5 t. Besides, a right turn is made from the rightmost lane, and the car is in the left one (Rules, point 40).

Memory rule. A plate under the sign: first check whether the sign is about you. Plates and zones of action are covered in the group 4 theory.

Left turn: paths A and B

No. 82: 44% correct, 27 answers. No. 78: 48%, 21 answers. No. 92: 55%, 22 answers.

Question. “Along which path is the left turn permitted?” The wording is almost identical, but the correct answers differ.

  • No. 82. The road is one-way up to the intersection (signs 5.6 and 1.21). The correct answer is only B: it starts from the leftmost lane, while A starts from the right one.
  • No. 78. Sign 5.15.1 “Directions of travel by lane” before the intersection, tram tracks along the road. The correct answer is only B: path A runs along the tracks, and with signs 5.15.1 and 5.15.2 driving on tram tracks at the intersection is prohibited.
  • No. 92. The correct answer is any path. The picture has no signs that restrict the choice, and we do not yet have a bank explanation for this question.

Where it is easy to slip. Three similar questions, three different answers: “only B”, “only B”, “any”. You cannot guess by pattern; each time look at which lane the path starts from and whether there is a sign or tram tracks.

Memory rule. Left turn from the leftmost lane unless a sign or marking allows otherwise (Rules, point 40). Sign 5.15.1 or 5.15.2 before the intersection: do not turn from the tram tracks (points 40 and 59). More in the article on left turns and lane choice and on the page for sign 5.15.1.

A three-lane road with a middle lane for both directions

Group 1, no. 5: 48% correct, 40 answers (the most in the list).

Question. On a marked two-way road with three lanes where the middle one is used in both directions, entering the leftmost lane is: permitted, prohibited, or permitted only for passing, going around an obstruction, turning left or making a U-turn?

Correct answer. Prohibited.

Where it is easy to slip. The list “passing, going around, left turn, U-turn” is familiar from other rules, and the third option looks safe. But those cases apply to the middle lane. On such a road the leftmost lane is for oncoming traffic only (Rules, point 54).

Memory rule. Three lanes, the middle one shared: the middle is for maneuvers, the left one is not mine.

Law: the age for category D for conscripts

Group 2, no. 21: 48% correct, 21 answers.

Question. Under the Law on Ensuring Road Traffic Safety, from what age may persons conscripted into the Armed Forces of Armenia or other troops be issued a license for category “D” and subcategory “D1”?

Correct answer. 19 years of age.

Where it is easy to slip. In the general case D and D1 are issued from 21, and that number sticks better. For persons conscripted into the Armed Forces or other troops the age is 19, provided they already hold a license for category B or C or subcategory C1 (Law, art. 27, part 3, item 2).

Memory rule. D is 21, for conscripts 19.

Note that although this question is about category D, it is part of the official question bank for categories A, B and C published on roadpolice.am (group 2, no. 21). So it can come up on a category B exam too.

Tram tracks before an intersection

Group 1, no. 104: 48% correct, 25 answers.

Question. In this situation, is the driver permitted to proceed on the tram tracks? The picture shows tram tracks in the middle of the road and, above the road, signs 5.15.1 and 5.15.2 showing lane directions.

Correct answer. No.

Where it is easy to slip. Normally you may drive on tram tracks going the same way, also to turn left or make a U-turn, so “permitted only when making a U-turn or a left turn” sounds plausible. But when sign 5.15.1 or 5.15.2 stands before the intersection, driving on tram tracks at the intersection is prohibited (Rules, points 40 and 59).

Memory rule. Blue lane signs before the intersection: the tram tracks are not for me.

Returning to the right lane after overtaking

Group 1, no. 77: 50% correct, 22 answers.

Question. After completing the pass, must the passenger-car driver change back to the rightmost lane? The picture shows a city street and a car passing a truck.

Correct answer. No, if the passing maneuver is performed in a populated area.

Where it is easy to slip. “Move back to the right” sounds like a general rule. But the requirement to keep as close to the right edge of the carriageway applies outside populated areas (and inside them on roads with signs 5.1 or 5.3 or where more than 80 km/h is allowed), point 55. After passing, the driver may return to the lane previously occupied if this does not hinder those being passed (point 73, sub-point 3).

Memory rule. In town you need not move right after passing; outside town, keep to the right edge.

U-turn and the “No left turn” sign

Group 1, no. 118: 50% correct, 22 answers. Related in topic, no. 64: 56%, 27 answers (outside the top 10).

Question. “Along which path is the U-turn permitted?” In no. 118 there is sign 3.18.2 “No left turn” before the intersection, and two U-turn paths, A and B, are shown.

Correct answer in no. 118. Any path.

Where it is easy to slip. Sign 3.18.2 prohibits only the left turn. A U-turn is a different maneuver; it is prohibited by sign 3.19 “No U-turn”. A U-turn is also restricted in the seven places of point 50: pedestrian crossings, tunnels, bridges and overpasses, railway crossings, visibility under 100 m, stops of route vehicles, and one-way roads. In the picture the paths do not run through those places.

No. 64. The same type of question, but the correct answer is “only A”. We do not yet have a bank explanation for it, so we do not analyze the reason. The lesson is the same as for left turns: the question type is identical, the answer depends on the picture.

Memory rule. “No left turn” ≠ “no U-turn”. Look for sign 3.19. More in the article on U-turn rules.

A truck with a left turn signal

Group 1, no. 59: 52% correct, 23 answers.

Question. In this situation, when proceeding straight ahead, it is permitted to go around the truck on the right, continue only after the truck has passed, or both?

Correct answer. Both are permitted.

Where it is easy to slip. “You don’t pass on the right” is remembered as a hard rule, and “both” looks like a trick. But in a populated area, on a road with two lanes in your direction, a truck with its left signal on can be passed on the right in the free right lane, or you can wait until it turns. Passing on the right a vehicle that has started a left turn is allowed, and when changing lanes you must give way to those in the right lane (Rules, points 39 and 74).

Memory rule. Truck’s left signal: on the right is fine if it is free.

More cautiously: group 4, signs

Group 4 questions did not make the main list because of the threshold: they were answered 17 and 19 times. That is very little, so treat them as a hint where to look closer, not a conclusion.

  • No. 119: 32% correct, 19 answers. A plate showing a passenger car: whom does the sign apply to? The correct answer: passenger cars and trucks with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 3.5 t. Not “passenger cars only”, not “passenger cars and motorcycles”. Plate 8.4.1 with a truck, by contrast, leaves the sign for trucks over 3.5 t only. See the 8.4.3 plate and the article on hard sign questions.
  • No. 86: 41% correct, 17 answers. A U-turn along paths A and B, sign 5.6 “End of one-way road” before the intersection; the correct answer in the bank is “neither path”. The logic is the same as in the U-turn section: on one-way roads a U-turn is prohibited (Rules, point 50).

What to review first

The data points to two places. It is not a forecast of passing the exam, only a hint where to look.

  1. Group 1: paths and lanes. Left turn, U-turn, tram tracks, passing. In each question a detail of the picture decides: which lane the path starts from, which sign stands before the intersection. Start with group 1 practice and the group 1 theory.
  2. Group 4: signs and plates. The zone of action of a sign, plates 8.4.1 and 8.4.3, the difference between a prohibition and a permission. Practice: group 4.

Group 11 with color plates (practice) is where our sample does best: 96% correct.

To test yourself in the exam format, take the exam simulation. According to the site's data, 307 mock exams have been completed on bibip: 51% of them were passed, with an average score of 16.4 out of 20 against a threshold of 18. This is data about the site's mock exams only; it is no guarantee of a result in a mock or the real exam.

How to use this list

  • Open the question page and try to solve it yourself first, then read the explanation.
  • For a picture question, look for the sign, the plate and the marking first, and only then at the paths.
  • Do not memorize questions with the same wording (“Along which path…”) by their answer: their answers differ.
  • Write down the point numbers of the Rules from the explanations: they help you recall the rule rather than the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Which theory exam questions are the hardest?
In more than 10,000 answers on bibip (16.09–07.10.2026), the share of correct answers is lowest in group 4 “Road signs” (76%) and group 1 “Maneuvers, U-turns and giving way” (77%). Of the 15 questions with the lowest share of correct answers (at least 20 answers each), 13 are from group 1.
How many correct answers do I need on the exam?
The knowledge test has 20 questions and you need at least 18 correct, so at most 2 mistakes are allowed. You get 30 minutes. Before it comes a psychological test of 3 questions where every answer must be correct (Government Decision No. 385-N, Annex 1).
What should I review first?
Group 1 questions with paths (left turn, U-turn, lanes, tram tracks) and group 4 questions about signs and plates. In both, one detail of the picture decides: the sign, the plate, the marking, the position of the car.
Is this list a difficulty ranking?
No, it is a rough guide. Each top-10 question has only 21–40 answers, so the gap between 44% and 48% is within noise. We say “about 40–55% correct”, not a place in a ranking.
