Exam day: what to expect and how to stay calm

On exam day you take a test on a computer. The theory exam has two parts: a psychological test of 3 questions, every one of which you must answer correctly, and a knowledge test of 20 questions, of which at least 18 must be correct; you get 30 minutes to answer (RA Government Decision No. 385-N of March 26, 2020, Annex 1, points 14, 15, 18 and 20). Bring an identity document and the receipt for the state duty. The two most effective "techniques" are arriving early and giving the first 3 questions twice your attention: one wrong answer in the psychological test means the exam is failed.

You can know the material perfectly and still fail, purely from nerves. Here is how the day goes, and the specific things that keep you steady.

Before the exam: simple preparation

Check your documents the evening before. Come to the theory exam with an identity document (for RA citizens, a passport or ID card) and the receipt for the state duty (Annex 1, points 11–12, and Annex 2, items 1 and 2 of the same decision). Get them together in advance, so the morning doesn't start with a search. A category B driver's license normally needs no medical certificate: the examining authority receives Armenian citizens' medical data automatically from the ARMED e-health system. Foreign citizens and stateless persons submit the medical accreditation certificate on paper. The whole process and the documents are covered in the article on the steps to a driver's license.

Sleep normally. A late-night "last revision" before the exam almost always does more harm than good: a tired brain reads the questions more slowly and falls for traps in the wording more easily.

In the morning, only a light refresher. At most one exam simulation, or a quick pass over the questions you get wrong most often. Trying to learn a new topic on exam day only adds anxiety.

Arrive early. A margin of time is the cheapest thing you can take for your nerves: rushing doubles the stress before you even reach the building. You can book online at roadpolice.am — choose the MIA registration and examination unit, then an available day and time; after booking, a four-digit code is sent to the email address you gave. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot, enter that code at the terminal and confirm you are there. If you did not book in advance, most services are also available in a live queue: take a ticket from the terminal and wait your turn (MIA notice of 07.09.2026, in Armenian).

How the test works

The theory exam is taken on a computer. The psychological test comes first, and it has 3 questions. You may answer the knowledge-test questions only if every psychological-test answer is correct, so one wrong answer there means the exam is failed. The knowledge test has 20 questions, each with 2 to 5 answer options, of which only one is correct. You get 30 minutes to answer, and the test is stopped when the time runs out (points 14, 15, 18 and 20). The legislation calls the first part a psychological test and does not describe its content; candidates report that it shows color plates (more on this in a separate article).

The format of the questions will feel familiar if you have studied with material based on the official question bank. That is exactly why bibip's exam simulation repeats the official format. It opens with 3 questions from Group 11: that set of color plates is what stands in for the psychological test on bibip.

In the exam room everything will be new to you — the setting, the computer, the people next to you. That is precisely why it matters that at least the format of the questions is familiar and feels like home. And if something goes wrong with the equipment, know this: if a technical failure has a material effect on the course of the exam, the exam is stopped and held again within 5 working days (Annex 1, point 10.1 of Decision No. 385-N).

Ways to keep your nerve

Give the first 3 questions twice your attention. These are the psychological-test questions, and they come exactly when you are still tense. There is no margin for error here: one wrong answer and the exam is failed. Deliberately slow down — read the question twice, then answer.

Read the question to the end, then all the options. The most common mistake under stress is answering a "familiar" question after reading only half of it. The question bank contains questions worded almost identically but with opposite answers: "is it permitted" versus "is it prohibited".

Don't fight a hard question. If a question leaves you in doubt, don't let it take your calm with it. Answer with your best judgment and move on: tension built up over one question spoils the quality of the next ten.

Remember that the knowledge test gives you a margin. You pass if at least 18 of the 20 knowledge questions are correct, which means at most 2 mistakes are allowed. So you don't have to be perfect in that part — and that thought is the best medicine against stress. Just remember that the margin does not extend to the psychological test: every one of its questions must be answered correctly.

If it didn't work out

Failing is unpleasant, but it isn't fatal. If you fail the theory exam, you may take it again no sooner than 7 days after the day of the failed exam, and if the second attempt also fails, each subsequent theory exam no sooner than one month after the day of the last failed exam (point 23). The exception is the paid fast-track retake (prices and deadlines in a separate article). What matters after a failure is to work out which topics the mistakes were in and practice those — by topic and in the hardest-questions set, rather than everything from scratch. And if the way you prepared until now was chaotic, try the two-week plan, this time with a system.

A clear head and a familiar format are your two best allies on exam day. For the first, sleep and arrive early; for the second, practice in the official format while you are still at home.
